A most thoughtful and resonant piece of writing. A guide and path for others to follow. Wise words to the few that will ever read or understand the real value of what you wrote.
I confess I only clued in to your work after your Quiet Details release (which was amazing) but I've been enjoying your work since then! And this was a really well written post! Cheers!
So beautifully written, Andrew and thank you for this wonderful new release, enjoying it immensely. I’m on the fence about the term “lower case music” because of the semantics of it - it can diminish the gravity of what I know it takes to create something worth repeated deep listens - but I also appreciate the term as I know what it means to me and how it adds a serenity to the genre… all that aside, I’m so grateful for all you do - this release is a beautiful triumph that will remain a lovely part of my listening…
I hear you on the issue of just drowning in *stuff*, especially in the streaming world of endless gorging … I always keep returning to an idea I first read on a blog by Momus (an artist whose early 00s writing I found more useful than any of his music, to be honest…): that in the C21, everyone wouldn’t be famous for 15 minutes, but for 15 people. I feel like I’m turning into one of those 15 (hopefully more!) for a few artists whose stuff I will try and get, no questions asked.
for me, there’s your stuff I love (and I’ve found your writing on using the iPad invaluable); Jim O’Roukre and Eiko Ishibashi… Colleen… the Matmos fellows and assorted side projects… assorted others I’m always looking out for. I figure if we all try and support a few others if and when we can, as well as maybe making our own stuff even for ourselves, well, yeah, that *is* a bit of good in the world.
To add more to what was a lazy and throwaway first impression - this album is REALLY, REALLY VERY NICE WORK.
You can probably tell I am not a professional writer.
I keep finding artists who have clearly been at this lark for a while and you can hear the craft, the experience, and the control in the deceptive simplicity of their work - the sparing use of material to say just what's needed and so more, and echoes of distant influences, and references from stuff you might've heard ... or maybe not.
This album has a wonderful sense of all of that, it's so beautiful, richly atmospheric electronic textures and spaces that are also detailed and never still. Definitely worth a deeper listen.
